چکیده

Background The United States beef cattle industry has increased in value by 32% from 2002 to 2011 and is presently estimated to be worth $79 billion dollars (USDA, 2013). As livestock demand and production continue to rise, there is a greater need for increased forage production and improved forage quality. Missouri ranks second in the number of cows in the United States (USDA, 2014). Forage production on soils with production restrictions, such as poorly-drained, floodplain soils, may have the greatest potential to increase to meet future demands.

Utilization of Polymer-coated Urea Fertilizer and Managed Subsurface Drainage Systems to Improve N Management and Corn Yields

Agronomic production on poorly drained soils in humid regions, such as the Central Claypan Region (MLRA), can exhibit low crop production in moderate to wet growing seasons. Extended periods of saturated soil conditions during a growing season may severely lower crop production by inhibiting plant growth, increasing the chance of disease, and providing conditions ideal for nutrient loss. Traffi...

Applying a Model to Predict the Location of Land Drained by Subsurface Drainage Systems in Central Minnesota

Agricultural drain tile systems are a significant influence on the condition of wetlands and waterways. The influence of these systems is often difficult to determine since installation records are incomplete or were never kept. Using a modified decision class tree and raster analysis in ArcGIS, a model for predicting the location of land drained by subsurface systems was evaluated. The three-c...

Reducing phosphorus loss in tile water with managed drainage in a claypan soil.

Installing subsurface tile drain systems in poorly drained claypan soils to improve corn ( L.) yields could potentially increase environmental phosphorus (P) loss through the tile drainage system. The objectives of the study were to quantify the average concentration and loss of ortho-P in tile drain water from a claypan soil and to determine whether managed subsurface drainage (MD) could reduc...

Nitrate leaching to subsurface drains as affected by drain spacing and changes in crop production system.

Subsurface drainage is a beneficial water management practice in poorly drained soils but may also contribute substantial nitrate N loads to surface waters. This paper summarizes results from a 15-yr drainage study in Indiana that includes three drain spacings (5, 10, and 20 m) managed for 10 yr with chisel tillage in monoculture corn (Zea mays L.) and currently managed under a no-till corn-soy...
